Frequently Asked Questions

How is download time calculated?
Download time is calculated by dividing the file size in bits (bytes times 8) by the internet speed in bits per second. For example, a 1 GB file at 100 Mbps takes about 86 seconds.
Why is my actual download speed slower than my plan?
ISP speeds are advertised in megabits per second (Mbps), not megabytes. Network overhead, congestion, server limits, Wi-Fi interference, and distance from the router all reduce real-world throughput.
What is the difference between Mbps and MBps?
Mbps (megabits per second) is used for internet speed. MBps (megabytes per second) is used for file transfer rates. 1 MBps equals 8 Mbps because there are 8 bits in a byte.
How long does it take to download a 4K movie?
A 20 GB 4K movie takes about 27 minutes at 100 Mbps, about 3 minutes at 1 Gbps fiber, or about 13 minutes at 200 Mbps 5G. Use this calculator to check your exact speed.
Is this download time calculator free to use?
Yes. This calculator is completely free, runs entirely in your browser, and requires no signup. No data is sent to any server.
